In the food industry, in production of meat, the flayed hide of an animal arises as a waste. In essence, the leather industry appreciates it. Only about half the total collagen content of raw hide is utilized in the final product - leather, and the remnant mainly passes into solid wastes. That means that leather industry as a whole produces considerable quantities of more or less polluted protein waste. According to statistic data, world production of this waste is estimated at about 600,000 metric tonsannually. In production of chrome-tanned leather, an estimated five thousand metric tons of waste are produced annually in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, even leather waste is but little utilized at present. Large quantities of waste are still beingdisposed of by dumping, composting, incinerating and pyrolysis.
