Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were covalently modified in order to achieve better dispersion in a block copolymer matrix. Surface of MWCNT was modified either a) by polymerization of styrene from MWCNT surface (MWCNT-PS), or b) by covalent bonding of cholesteryl groups (MWCNT-chol). In both cases, MWCNT surface was first modified by 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)nitrobenzene to introduce hydroxyl groups onto MWCNT surface (MWCNT-OH). MWCNT-PS were prepared by reaction of MWCNT-OH with 2-bromopropionyl bromideand subsequent atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene from the surface of MWCNT by ATRP using CuBr/PMDETA as a catalytic system. MWCNT-chol were prepared by esterification of MWCNT-OH by reaction with cholesteryl chloroformate. The modified MWCNT were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA), and Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
