Ontology is a heart of the knowledge management system (KMS) or expert system. Ontology development is a crucial problem that can be supported by Software Engineering (SE) procedures. The theoretical bases of the paper and explanations of the terms: ontology, ontology in KMS, Topic maps is after the introduction. Methodology of the ontology development is described as an SE procedure. Phases of the methodology: collecting information sources and their processing utilizing analytical software (SW); clarification of the terms in the area in focus, selection of the candidate's terms for ontology classes; verification of terms regarding the document base; ontology design and its verification. It is used the analytical SW for the text mining TOVEK. Steps of ontology design phase include: schema of the classes and associations; table of the assignments characteristics to classes and editing the ontology in the ATOM Schema editor. Summary of the experience in methodology application and conclusion with ideas of the future improvements is the final part.
