Zlín - up to now has been considered a symbol of business success, represented by its famous native Tomáš Baťa, whose business changed the character of the town significantly. Zlín had been considerably modernized and turned into a distinctive company town. However, till 1914 the town of Zlín was no industrial center, but a small town of agro-trade character. In this period, the public engagement of Zlín entrepreneurs corresponded to their education, economic level and power. Until the end of the 19th century, conventional solidarity was typical of all economically active people. However, since the beginning of the 20th century, this solidarity had been gradually disrupted by the advanced industrialization. It was typical of this period that mostly small businessmen, tradesmen and farmers were engaged in public affairs such as politics or culture.
