Investigation of structure and stability of aldehyde cellulose
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) can be prepared by a highly specific periodate oxidation of 2,3-hydroxyl groups of cellulose to aldehydes, cleaving the C2-C3 bond of anhydroglucose unit in the process.1 Highly oxidized forms of DAC can be easily solubilized in hot water giving a clear solution with high content of reactive aldehyde groups, which can be easily functionalized (aldolization, oxidation, imination reactions). The DAC is thus an excellent precursor for preparation of various materials (polyacids, hydrogels), which structures and properties are closely related to the structure of starting material. However, the structure and chemistry of DAC in solution are currently poorly understood. In our work, products of periodate oxidation were identified in DAC solutions by NMR spectroscopy for the first time. Subsequent study of the acidic DAC solutions aging demonstrated that those kept at a pH 3.5 remained active even after several weeks from preparation, therefore eliminating the need to prepare a fresh DAC solution each time as was previously deemed necessary. 2 Furthermore, the molecular weight of DAC was shown to be controlled by the conditions of solubilization process, which allows to easily prepare material with desired degree of polymerization.
