Agriculture is one of the most sensitive sector to climate changes. The key factor of this topic is maintenance of a soil quality for providing of a sustainable arable farming. This work deals with development of novel biodegradable hydrogels based on whey for improvement of water retention capacity in the soil. The results from the initial stage of the project implementation reveal promising water uptake capacity of the developed biopolymer/whey hydrogels that is sustainable after three drying-swelling cycles (Figure 1). Other characteristics including effects of polymer matrices and crosslinking agents, description of material properties and stability of developed hydrogels will be presented within the conference contribution.
