Over 34 billion pieces of footwear are produced annually worldwide, with an average consumption estimated at 3 to 4 pairs per person per year. Footwear is usually made up of three functionally distinct components: the sole, the upper and the insole. Each of these components is subject to specific requirements relating to functionality, health and overall comfort, with more than 20 assessment parameters in total.Traditionally, the footwear industry has been dominated by leather, but this is gradually being replaced by newly developed polymeric materials. However, a certain proportion of conventional footwear is still made of chrome-plated leather, the reuse of which is a problem that has not yet been resolved. One possible solution is the carbonization of waste leather with subsequent functionalization of the carbonized fibers, which can be used in various applications.This presentation will include research findings showing new possibilities for using natural materials in the production of footwear components. Emphasis will be placed on natural fibrous materials that, in some cases, outperform conventional footwear materials.
