'Buffing dust' is a kind of leather industry waste, generated during the surface treatment offootwear components and shoemaking of semi-finished products. So far, this waste buffing dusthas been used as a filler component in composites but it can perform as a functional polymersystem in energy storage device. During tanning process, the leather of calf skin and hog skin aretreated with chromium (III) sulfate. Therefore, the obtained buffing dust (leather industry waste)consists of particles based on chromium collagen cross-linked complex. In this work, focus hasbeen given mainly on preparation of buffing dust based functional polymer system. The pure (calfand hog) and mixed (particles of tanned leather, textiles, polyurethane and rubber compound) formof buffing dusts were first 'carbonized' (under inert nitrogen atmosphere, temperature (400-1200°C for 2-24 h) and then 'activated' with potassium hydroxide (m.p 406°C) to obtain thefunctional polymer system. The original buffing dusts and carbonized/ activated buffing dusts wereexamined step by step. The results demonstrate the trends that can be applied to the preparation ofbio carbon with high specific surface area and conductivity, comparable with existing conductingpolymers. Systematic research in this direction is still in progress at our laboratory.
