Ludwig Salvator of Tuscany (1847–1915), scietist and traveler: from the history of the Habsburg line in Tuscany

  • Popis výsledku anglicky

This publication is the final and most important output of the grant project on Ludwig Salvator of Tuscany (1847–1915), a scientist and a traveller, which was worked out in the National Archives between 2016–2018. It is the first biography written in Czech about this important member of the Habsburg-Lorraine House, on the basis of original source research, not only in the Czech archives and libraries, but also in institutions abroad. The primary source for the research has been the archival fond of the Family Archives of Tuscan Habsburgs, deposited in the National Archives in Prague. Its richness, variety and breadth provides immensely important and non-substitutable documentation to the fate, research expeditions, works and activities of Archduke Ludwig Salvator, the fourth son of the last Tuscan Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany and his wife Maria Antonia Bourbon-Sicilly. Thanks to his gift and through an extraordinary education, Ludwig Salvator became a renowned scholar of his time- a natural scientist, an ethnographer, geographer, traveller and a writer, whose published works reached about sixty, predominantly of scholarly nature. He gained numerous international awards, orders, honorable memberships of important European scholarly societies for his works and research, pioneering interpretation of nature preservation, his modern attitude to evaluation of the importance of world international expositions, as well as for his non-elitist relation to ordinary people; for patronage and support of peaceful movement. The State Council of Majorca named him Her Famous Son and he gained an honorary citizenship of Valdemossa. The first chapter of this biography depicts history of political forming of Europe back to the Medici family and their decease and vacating of the Tuscany throne. There are explained details about gaining Tuscany for Francis Stephan Lorraine in 1737 and life stories of his descendants, up to changes in arrangement of European states influenced by revolutionary waves and unification processes in Germany and first of all in Italy (risorgimento), which led members of Tuscan line of the Habsburg-Lorraine family to a forced exile in Bohemia in 1859, and in 1866 to a definite loss of Tuscany. Besides the history of Tuscany Grand Duchy in the years of ruling Habsburgs, there is an explanation of conditions that led to returning the Tuscan line into the Habsburg family according to the articles, comprised in the so called family status from 1839. The final chapter of the first part of this publication is about the life of Tuscan Habsburgs in Bohemia, which lasted until the end of the First World War. The detailed biography of Archduke Ludwig Salvator continues after the first part of the book, and is concentrated mainly on his childhood, youth, family, upbringing and education. Educational methods used for children on Tuscan court are thoroughly analysed. Then the attention is devoted to Ludwig’s currative stay in Venice, as well as to his first literary attempts and to his travels round Venice, Lombardy, Istria and Dalmatia. After the year 1864, Salvator’s private studies with Prague’s professors are described, his life in Prague, as well as the fatal accident of Archduchess Mathilda. Further on, the authors of the biography follow his travels to the Balearic Islands, around the northern coast of Africa, i.e. depicting those pieces of information missing or rarely mentioned in foreign biographies. All the above-mentioned details to the topics were gained from the Family Archives of Tuscan Habsburgs in Prague. Ludwig Salvator’s personal inheritance deposited in the Austrian State Archives in Vienna and Archduke’s archive depository in the General Archives in Majorca were used for for the later period. The biography concentrates on such places of Ludwig Salvator’s life not included in foreign publications and is also supplemented with interesting reproductions of records from the above-mentioned archives. The appendices to the publication contain transcripts of the documents which have not yet been published, either from Prague or Vienna and Majorca collections of archival material, connected with the life and work of Archduke Ludwig Salvator. There is no doubt that the presented biography represents a certain milestone in the knowledge of not only Ludwig Salvator’s unique personality, in the context of international research, but as the first publication in the Czech historiography, it draws closer the relation of the Habsburg-Lorraine secundo-geniture to the Czech milieu which lasted, in different phases, for more than one century. The publication then has filled a gap in getting to know the subsidiary line of the ruling imperial Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty and thus places the Czech research into an international research community. Simultaneously, it creates a platform for further research and scientific projects on the national and international level.
