The Formation of the Czechoslovak Gendarmerie in Carpathian Ruthenia

The creation of a gendarmerie corps in Carpathian Ruthenia was a challenging task for Czechoslovakia and had to be carried out during the post-war upheaval with insufficient material and human resources that often involved passionate social, national and religious movements. In addition to the prosecution of various criminal gangs, there were frequent border incidents. An important role in managing this task was played by a well chosen person for the commander of the Carpathian gendarmerie, who, through a combination of sharp demeanor towards subordinates, but also towards superiors, together with the ability to teach novices, managed to handle the whole complex process. However, the help of temporarily or permanently transferred gendarmes from the Czech lands was necessary, but they first had to acclimatize to the new environment. Although many of them did not stay long in the new position (due to e. g. alcoholism, cruelty or sexually transmitted diseases), others performed exceptionally in prosecuting criminals and training their new colleagues. To a certain extent this community was strengthened by a common sense of an external threat (e. g. bandit gangs).
