Archivní a spisová rozluka je zajímavým fenoménem z hlediska právního, politického, odborného, osobního i etického a stala se zásadním bodem vývoje našich archivů po roce 1918. Její koncepce a realizace se však neobešla bez problémů. Zasahovaly do ní jak odborné debaty, tak politické cíle a očekávání jednotlivých protagonistů. Pro jeho realizátory představoval kromě jedinečného odborného potenciálu v mnoha případech také profesní a etické dilema.

One of the issues that the new Czechoslovak Republic had to deal with right from its inception was the archival and file separation from Austria. The successor states of the Habsburg monarchy (including the Czechoslovakia) immediately laid claim to the management of their common cultural (including archival) heritage in 1918. Two options were considered - condominial administration, leaving the archival collections in Vienna, or taking these collections relating to the new state under its direct administration. In the case of Czechoslovakia, the second option was chosen, not only for political but also for professional reasons. The archival and file separation thus conceived was regulated in the St. Germain Peace Treaty of 1919 and, in particular, in the Prague Archival Convention of 1920. On the basis of this agreement, Czechoslovakia took over selected archival units and files under thirty years old from the registries of the central authorities, which concerned the territory and realities of the new state. Archival and file separation is an interesting phenomenon in legal, political, professional, personal and ethical terms, and it became a fundamental point in the development of our archives after 1918. However, its conception and implementation were not without problems. Both professional debates and the political aims and expectations of the individual protagonists interfered. For its implementers, in addition to its unique professional potential, it also presented in many cases a professional and ethical dilemma.
