Der Beitrag stellt ein Forschungsprojekt vor, das die Konstruktion der adeligen Identität im Werk des böhmischen Jesuiten und Historikers Bohuslav Balbín (1621–1688) untersucht. Balbín widmete sich intensiv der Geschichte des böhmischen Adels und verstand ihn als zentrale politische und soziale Elite der Frühen Neuzeit. Im Mittelpunkt steht die kritische Edition und tschechische Übersetzung der beiden ersten Bücher der zweiten Dekade seiner Miscellanea historica regni Bohemiae (1687–1688), in denen Balbín Ursprung, Bedeutung, Selbstverständnis und genealogische wie heraldische Besonderheiten des Adels darstellt. Das Projekt kontextualisiert Balbíns Ansichten im mitteleuropäischen Rahmen, berücksichtigt seine Zusammenarbeit mit zeitgenössischen Gelehrten und analysiert, wie historische, genealogische und mythische Elemente zur Legitimation adeliger Herrschaft beitrugen. Darüber hinaus wird Balbíns Einfluss auf die spätere Historiographie sowie die Bedeutung seines Werks für das Verständnis frühneuzeitlicher Identitätskonstruktionen untersucht. Ein interdisziplinärer Ansatz – unter Einbeziehung von Historikern, Philologen und IT-Spezialisten – ermöglicht die Erstellung einer kommentierten Edition mit digitalen Registern. Das Projekt leistet so einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Erforschung der historischen Identität des mitteleuropäischen Adels.

The article presents a research project that examines the construction of noble identity in the work of the Bohemian Jesuit and historian Bohuslav Balbín (1621–1688). Balbín devoted great attention to the history of the Bohemian nobility, which he regarded as the central political and social elite of the early modern period. The project focuses on the critical edition and Czech translation of the first two books of the second decade of his Miscellanea historica regni Bohemiae (1687–1688), in which Balbín explores the origins, significance, self-perception, and genealogical as well as heraldic characteristics of the nobility. The project places Balbín’s ideas within a broader Central European context, taking into account his collaboration with contemporary scholars and analyzing how historical, genealogical, and mythical elements contributed to legitimizing noble authority. Moreover, it examines Balbín’s influence on later historiography and the relevance of his work for understanding early modern constructions of collective identity. Through an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together historians, philologists, and IT specialists, the project will produce an annotated edition with digital indexes. In doing so, it makes a significant contribution to the study of the historical identity of the Central European nobility.
