The paper deals with the relationship between company performance and innovation. By means of analysing the new Strategy of 2020 of the EU in the area of financing research, development and innovation I deal with the perspectives of financing innovationprojects of small and medium-sized Czech companies. The article includes a detailed analysis of the EU financial programmes focused on financial support of applied research, development and innovation of the SME segment with a stress on strengthening project capacity of Czech companies, namely in the field of community programmes. Cooperation of Czech companies with foreign partners from both company and university sphere on projects in this area can create significant added value here in the near future. Analysing bilateral programmes of international cooperation in this field is also part of this paper.
