This paper tries to examine the topic of spirituality in sport in the international and contemporary context. It presents some preliminary standings of the pilot research project into the perception of spirituality by sportsmen in certain different selected areas of movement activity ? outdoor activities, sport games and martial arts. Some interesting results are discussed which show there are many traditional prejudices concerning the spirituality of martial arts, the way of thinking of football fans or the poetical nature of climbers or canoeists. Even if the results of this pilot project may not be considered as generalisable, they may nevertheless give us a good viewpoint to adjust the rules of the main research. We hope it would stimulate other investigations in this field.
