Human Development in the ECOWAS Member States in the Period 1994-2012
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This paper deals with human development in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the period from 1994 to 2012. The paper measures human development in each of the ECOWAS countries and eventually compares the results with the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) as a whole. The community member states with some exceptions, are among the least developed countries in the world with low level of human development. In addition to the low level of human development, the study also shows unsatisfactory results in many indicators of progress towards convergence process. The study concludes that ECOWAS as an economic community has failed to satisfactorily function in eliminating disparities within member countries in terms of human development. For ECOWAS to experience a real convergence between member states, there is an urgent need for a broad range of socioeconomic policy formulation and implementation that would accelerate a sustainable, inclusive growth and development.
