Studie nabízí interpretativní přehled dlouhé polemiky československého disentu i exilu o románu Jana Pelce ...a bude hůř, která probíhala v letech 1985-1989. Části knihy byly nejprve publikovány v exilovém časopise Svědectví Pavla Tigrida (1984). Beatnicky orientovaný román spustil ostré diskuse mezi různými proudy Charty 77. Dotýkaly se zejména předních zástupců undergroundu na jedné straně a stoupenců reformního komunismu a katolicismu na straně druhé. Během polemiky vykrystalizovaly obtížně slučitelné kulturně-hodnotové pozice mezi zmíněnými proudy Charty 77, ale i mezi zástupci exilu. Polemika se ve výsledku dotýkala i "politické" otázky, nakolik bylo undergroundové hnutí zapojeno do rozhodujících procesů v Chartě. Pelcova kniha ilustrovala i komplikovaný vztah části mladé generace k technokratickému vidění světa až už na východě nebo na západě. V tomto smyslu docházelo k srovnávání románu ...a bude hůř se západoněmeckým undegroundovým bestsellerem My děti ze stanice Zoo (1978).

Study ...it will get worse. The polemic about Jan Pelc's novel from the years 1985–1989 provides an overview of the long discussion in Czechoslovak dissent about that book. It was printed first in the exile magazine Svědectví (1984). The polemic caused arguments between the wings within the Charter 77. Specifically, between the underground subculture on the one hand and representatives of the reform-communist and some representatives of Catholics on the other. On the basis of the raw story of the beatniks from industrial northern Bohemia from the second half of the 1970s, it outlined the incompatibility of values between the underground and the culturally more traditional parts of the Charter 77. As a result, the discussion disrupted some essential relations in both Czechoslovak dissent and exile. It led to the demands of the representatives of the underground for more representation in the decisive structures of Charter 77. At the same time, the book showed that the conflicting relationship to the modern technocratic society was crossing the Iron Curtain. The book has often been compared to the West Berlin underground bestseller We Children from Zoo Station (1978).
