Potential of Short Rotation Forestry and Agroforestry for Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainability

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The potential role of Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) and Agroforestry (AF) systems indicates conscious production of biological resources to mitigate climate change and also minimize the demand of sustainable production ofnbiological resources, enhance food and energy security without deterioration of soil fertility and productivity in developed and under developing countries. Indeed, the primary goal of SRFi biomass production mainly for energy purpose, with the basic principle of growing fast-growing woody species (Populus and Salix) in a high density under Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) management. The harvest period of SRC generally varies from 2 to 6 years but also depends on genetic plant material, site quality, management practices, climatic and edaphic factors and purpose. Agriculture is one of the important sectors where the impacts of climate change surpass tolerance limits with implications for the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers dependent on this sector. SRF and AF, because of their capacity to support climatic and economic benefits, they are appraised as best “no regrets” measures in making societies adapt and become resilient to the impacts of climate change. SRF and AF systems can play a major role in the adaptation to climate change including changes in the reducing of the greenhouse gas emissions (mainly sequestration of carbon-C emissions), mediate microclimate (maintain the temperature, soil moisture under canopy), provide protection through provision of permanent cover, opportunities for diversification of the agricultural systems, water and climatic resources, enhance soil fertility, and provide protection from drought. In addition, SRF and AF clearly offer economic and ecological advantages.nThis article suggests the potential of SRF and AF to mitigate the climate changenand an option for sustainable land use system.
