RESSAC: Unlocking the potential of Rare-Earth SesquiSulfide Advanced single Crystals for fast scintillators and mid-infrared laser sources

  • Annotation in Czech

Using an innovative combination of advanced methods of micro-pulling-down or vertical Bridgman method, we will synthesize completely new multimodal materials based on large-sized single crystals of binary rare earth sulfides, whose optical properties are not described in the literature. We will focus on selected Ln2S3 (Ln=La, Gd, Lu, Y) doped by Ce3+, Pr3+ ions for more efficient and faster scintillators, or by Dy3+, Nd3+ ions for solid-state lasers with low phonon energy. We will investigate their structural, scintillation and luminescence properties using designated analytical methods. We will correlate the experimental data with our first-principle calculations (DFT), model them, and thus create a comprehensive summary of the physical properties of this novel and unexplored group of crystalline materials. We will develop new faster and more efficient scintillators that will significantly improve the resolution of current life-saving medical imaging techniques and new low-phonon laser active media that will expand the capabilities of laser sources generating mid-infrared radiation.
