Efficient Spatial Hierarchies for Complex 3D Scenes

Complex 3D scenes are being used in many practical applications, such as architectural visualization, computer-generated movies, product visualization, predictive rendering, scientific visualization, VR simulations, and others. For handling such scenes, it is necessary to organize their data in spatial data structures that serve the purposes of efficient rendering, modeling, or simulation. Our project aims at designing new methods for the construction and traversal of spatial data structures. We will focus mainly on Bounding Volume Hierarchies (BVH), which proved to be one of the most efficient data structures for the given task. We identified unexplored possibilities stemming from using tighter bounding volumes in combination with efficient parallel construction and traversal algorithms for BVHs. Additionally, we plan to exploit deep learning to handle specific subtasks in BVH methods. We will also design new automatic methods that will better exploit the existing support for BVHs in modern graphics APIs.
