Catalysts and Methods for Recycling Commodity Polymers

  • Annotation in Czech

Environmental pollution due to the rapid growth in plastic production is a major global concern. Accordingly, the principal goal here is to develop catalytic processes for depolymerization and valorization of various commodity polymers. To accomplish this, we will work in three main phases. 1) We will firstly develop dehydrofunctionalization and dehydrogenation methods for generating double bonds in the polymer backbone. 2) We will then overcome challenges in C=C bond cleavage by developing unprecedented catalytic olefin metathesis reactions that will result in polymer breakdown. For such, we will combine the use of efficient catalysts (Mo-, W-, and Ru-based, new and known ones) and new cross-metathesis partners to ensure successful depolymerization. 3) Lastly, we will put forth new methods for repolymerization and valorization of the resulting depolymerization products. Collectively, these advances will provide invaluable insights for C–C and C–H bond activation processes that are crucial for chemical recycling of plastics and to achieve a more circular economy.
