    Challenging spectral theory with artificial materials

    The circular drum produces the lowest fundamental tone. Or, among all domains of given area, the disk minimises the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian. Does the optimality of disk persists for the Dirac operator? This type of questions constitute the first part of this proposal, where spectral geometry is challenged with relativistic quantum materials (graphene). The second part is concerned with developing a systematic spectral analysis of matrix differential operators mixing the Laplace and Dirac structures, which describe brand-new hybrid materials (semi-Dirac semi-metals). The last, synergistic part is concerned with quantum methods applied to models in relativistic theory of gravity. The study of the individual tasks will lead to new abstract techniques reinforcing the present operator-theoretic apparatus globally. The present project is an updated version of the standard and EXPRO projects which were both recommended for funding last year if there were sufficient funds.
