    Hand in hand with the growing demand for more reliable and sensitive analytical methods, advances in sample pretreatment are essential. The project aims to develop novel concepts that will address the lack of automated sample pretreatment methods integrated or coupled with state-of-the-art separation techniques and will enable simple, fast, repeatable, quantitative, and fully unattended analytical workflows. The project will describe fundamental principles and automation of several unexplored liquid phase microextraction concepts and will develop new procedures for their direct coupling to subsequent instrumental analysis. Investigations of novel strategies for direct injections of resulting micro-extracts into capillary electrophoresis and liquid chromatography will ensure unprecedented compatibility of sample treatment and analysis, which so far, has not been properly addressed. The suitability of the herein-proposed concepts will be proved by determining emerging contaminants in environmental and food samples and relevant biomarkers and pharmaceuticals in body fluids.
