    DIY or Commercial Sensors for STEM Teaching?

    Data-logging techniques have been available for many years in schools because of the availability of commercial Probeware systems (also called MBL - Microcomputer Based Labs or School Measurement Systems) that are commonly commercially available. However, recently, thanks to the easily accessible and cheap electronic components, it is easy to build your DIY measuring system in the DIY (Do It Yourself) style. An alternative to commercial Probeware systems can be created by combining an inexpensive microcontroller, such as an Arduino, with many cheap sensors or entire sensor modules. The issue of DIY-style measurement brings with it several new topics that can be very useful, especially in the field of STEM education. But are cheap DIY sensors comparable to commercial &quot;school&quot;sensors? And what benefits can a DIY approach to STEM education bring? This work deals with comparing several sensors suitable for science measurements, as well as with the design of new topics in the field of STEM education using DIY sensors.
