Study on Translation Strategies for Historical Academic Texts - A Case Study of Translation of 'A Cultural History of Objects in the Medieval Age'
Original language description
This paper takes Bassnett’s concept of cultural translation as theoretical guide and uses “A Cultural History of Objects in the Medieval Age” as object of study. It analyzes specific examples and explores the translation strategies of historical academic texts from the three levels of lexical, syntax, and discourse. It is evident that at the lexical level, it is essential to employ the strategies of cultural compensation and cultural transplantation to achieve cultural functional equivalence . At the syntactic level, in order to align with the expression norms of the translated culture, word order adjustment and structural separation is employed to align the translated text more closely with the cultural norms of the target language. At the discourse level, the issues pertaining to the translated discourse are addressed through the means of lexical articulation and logical connectivity, with the objective of ensuring the smooth and logical coherence of the translation.
