Applications of human respiratory system modelling in the context of biomedical engineering
Original language description
Modelling of the human respiratory system is increasingly used for medical product development and testing. This shift is also caused by the high degree of complexity during animal experimentation and the growing ethical concerns. This presentation will focus on the electro-mechanical lung simulator xPULM and its connected applications. This simulator combines in-silico, ex-vivo and mechanical respiratory modelling approaches by realistically replicating an actively breathing human lung. The human organ itself can be represented by a primed porcine lung, obtained from a slaughterhouse process. Applications of the xPULM in the context of biomedical engineering, such as aerosol characterisation and its role in medical device testing, will be presented. Furthermore, related activities of the team for Medical Devices & Integrated Healthcare will be introduced.
