Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of apple cultivars
Original language description
Apples (Malus domestica) are among both the most favorite and consumed fruits worldwide. They are available on the market throughout the year. Also, apples are a major potential source of polyphenols in North American and European diet. A number of studies have shown that polyphenols in the human diet have beneficial effects on health via protecting the body from damage caused by oxidative stress. For example, they reduce risk of degenerative and cardiovascular diseases. This study aims at the comparison of the total phenolic content (TPC) using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and the antioxidant activity measured via the non-separating Trolox equivalent antioxidant Capacity method (TEAC). Another aim of this study was to select apple cultivars with a high content of bioactive substances. The highest total antioxidant activity and the total phenolic content was found in apple cultivars 'Artiga' and 'Meteor'.
