Gene resources of wheat with different grain colour, their properties and use in breeding
Original language description
Absstract published in: 8th International Triticeae Symposium, Wermingerode, Germany, 2017. Book of Abstracts, p. 76. A genetic resources collection of winter and spring wheat was gathered, including several near-isogenic lines differing in coloration of grain. The collection consists the genotypes with a blue aleurone (Ba genes), purple pericarp (Pp genes) and yellow endosperm (Psy genes) with the presence of anthocyanins and carotenoids, respectively. These are used for breeding. The company Agrotest Fyto, Ltd. participated on the breeding winter wheat varieties ‘Skorpion’ and ‘PS Karkulka’ with non-standard colour of grain determined by anthokyanins. Our goal is to combine different genes for the grain colour and simultaneously to improve important agronomic traits such as: yield, resistance to stress and bread-making quality. Genetic resources and developed breeding materials are used to study the effects of grain discoloration on fusarium head expression. In 2016, the highest yields have been achieved in control group varieties with red (standard) grain colour 11.78 t/ha. Breeding lines with yellow endosperm, purple pericarp and blue aleurone reached average yields 9.88 t/ha, 9.66 t/ha and 8.80 t/ha, respectively. We developed lines with dark grain colour. In some cases, a combination of both colours characterized by a dark blue colour with a violet shade was observed. We assume that the low yield of wheat with blue aleurone this is conditioned by the negative influence of genes linked to the Ba gene on the translocated chromosome segment from wild species. It would be desirable to disrupt these linkages by evoking recombination. Most contemporary breeding winter lines with blue grain are characterized by low resistance to fusarium head blight (FHB), snow mould and low volume weight of grain. Lines with purple pericarp often exhibit small grains, whereas their resistance to FHB is approximately similar in comparison to common varieties with red grain.
