Comparison of fatigue performance of blade steels T552 and T671 in a corrosive environment
Original language description
This contribution is based on an experimental programme which deals with the issue of blade steels T552 and T671 corrosion fatigue damage. The specimens were taken from a reference material delivered for blade production and tested in a corrosion cell under pre-stress of 300 MPa. A chloride solution of 35 ppm was chosen as the environment at a temperature of 80 °C. The results for steel T552 were compared with results published in the International Journal of Fatigue by other authors. Good agreement was found. However, the results showed a considerable scatter especially for air conditions. This behaviour is related to the globular inclusions content. Steel T671 is more predisposed to subsurface initiation than steel T552 and this meant that no fatigue limit exists for the investigated corrosive environment.
