The performance and egg quality in laying hens housed in cages and on litter

  • Original language description

The experiments were caried out to investigate the effect of housing systém on egg quality characteristics. ISA brown hens from 20 to 64 weeks of age were housed in battery cages (550 cm2/hen) and on deep litter housing systém (7 hen/m2). Every four weeks, 90 eggs for each house were used for egg quality assessment. Egg weight, shell breaking strengh and percent yolk were superior for the deep litter-housed birds than the caged birds. Eggs laid on deep litter were significantly (P≤0.01) heavier (62.83g) than birds housed in cages (61.94g). Shell breaking strengh on deep litter and in cages was 46.91 and 44.14 N, respectively. On the other hand, caged hens had albumen quality better than other which reared on litter. Percentage albumen, albumen index and Haugh Units score were higher in cages than on deep litter. Haugh Units were significantly (P≤0.01) higher in cages systém (73.52) than on litter (71.73) housing systém.
