Glucose non-fermenting bifidobacteria are frequent in the hen caeca.

  • Original language description

Two media were evaluated to determine their electivity and selectivity for bifidobacteria in the hen caeca samples : Wilkins-Chalgren agar (MW; Oxoid) modified by the addition of acetic acid (1 ml/l) and TPY agar (MTPY; ADSA) with acetic acid (1 ml/l) and mupirocin (100 mg/l). The colonies arising on the plates inoculated with caecal samples were Gram stained, acreeneed for the presence of fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase activity, and tested for fermentation patterns using ANAEROtest (Lachema, Czech Republic) and API 50CHL (Biomérieux, France) kits. MTPY agar was both more elective and more selective than MW agar. Caecal bifidobacteria counts were higher than using MTPY agar. Higher electivity of MTPY agar was due to soya peptone with high carbohydrate content. Most of isolates from this medium were glucose negative and rafinose positive.
