A discrete model of signal transmission in an epithelial layer
Original language description
Pattern formation and other processes (cancer, programmed cell death etc.) in epithelial layers heavily relies on cell communication by secreted ligands - growth factors. These, mostly extracellular, ligands activate or inhibit intracellular metabolic pathways that control secretion of the growth factors. The released growth factors can diffuse through the extracellular space and interact with receptors on a cell surface (autocrine and paracrine signaling). The resulting combination of ligands bound onreceptors and their concentration determinates the cell development. This contribution is devoted to the mathematical analysis of a positive feedback in cell-cell interactions (ligand-receptor interaction complex formation activation of ligand release ligand transport ligand-receptor interaction). A mathematical model of the cell-cell signaling was proposed. The model is relevant to the physiology of epithelial layers and to a number of in-vitro experiments. The model analysis predicts e
