Liquid marbles as a novel encapsulation technique

  • Original language description

Term “liquid marble” is becoming more popular in the bioengineering and pharmaceutical fields. The liquid marble (LM) is a liquid droplet covered by solid particles, so it has two main parts: liquid core and solid shell. Typical size is between 1 to 5 mm and during rolling it doesn’t destroy and do not have any leakage. They are prepared by covering the droplet by solid particles, spontaneously or by shaking of powered bed. We have encapsulated water media for cell cultivation or oil phase with dissolved active pharmaceutical excipient (API). In the case of LM with water media HT-29 cell line was used to produce spheroids (3D cell model, model of tumour), these could be tested for potential antitumour API especially their penetration through cell line. Also others cell line were tested and dependence of cultivation period, LM volume and cell density. In second case for oil system, poorly soluble API was picked and dissolved in the various oils, then oil LMs were prepared and tested for mechanical properties. These studies proof the ability of water LM to product cell spheroids for further characterization and also oil LM can improve the bioavailability of poorly water soluble APIs.
