The limits of domestication in the translation of modern literary texts from Yiddish to Czech

  • Original language description

The contribution focuses on the analysis of various kinds of cultural transpositions in the translation of modern Yiddish texts into Czech. The base for the analysis constitutes the translation of selected fables by Eliezer Shteynbarg which have been published in the monthly journal "Plav – Journal for the World Literature". The analysis of the translations concentrates on the following particular aims: 1) We examine the correlations between the inter- and intratextual coherence based on the analysis of selected problematic passages and describe the different types of shifts and manipulations. 2) We consider the possibilities and limits of the pragmatic explication in the literary text (KLAUDY 1996). From the functional perspective, this procedure is – at least in the literary texts – highly problematic and should be avoided. In our opinion however, it is sometimes the only possibility to bridge the irritating gap between the source- and target cultures. 3) Finally, we rethink, from different perspectives, the limits of the cultural transfer from the source culture into the target culture on the basis of the analysed translations. We will show that in such a culturally and religiously anchored language as Yiddish, it is often impossible to separate the linguistic specifics from the cultural and historical ones. The scope for manipulations and shifts is wide but definitely not limitless. Therefore, the equalizing act between the inter- and intralingual coherence in the analysed texts can turn into a dramatic struggle for balance.
