The Translation of Yiddish Literature into Czech in Jewish Periodicals. The Impact of the Medium and the Genre of the Source Text on the Choice of Translation Strategies.

  • Original language description

The paper focuses on the translation of Yiddish literature into Czech in Jewish periodicals such as Židovská ročenka (ŽR Jewish Almanac) or Věstník židovských náboženských obcí v Československu (VŽNO Bulletin of Jewish Religious Communities in Czechoslovakia). This paper provides answer to two closely connected questions: 1) What impact does the printed – and thus spatially limited – medium of “periodical” have on the choice of translation strategies in the process of translating Yiddish literature into Czech? 2) To what extent are the processes of domestication and foreignization determined by the genre of the translated text? For these purposes I analysed the translations of three texts by Sholem Aleykhem: an extract from his novel “Menakhem-Mendl” translated into Czech by Hana Náglová in cooperation with Stanislav Taraszka for the periodical ŽR, an extract from the novel “shir-hashirim” and the short story “a peysekh in dorf”, both texts translated by Stanislav Taraszka in 1959 and 1956, respectively, for the periodical VŽNO.
