Reactions of plant amine oxidases with N6-aminoalkyl derivatives of adenine
Original language description
Plant copper-containing amine oxidases (CAOs, EC 1.4.3.6) catalyze the oxidation of various amines. Once there was a hypothesis that the enzymes could oxidize cytokinins - plant hormones derived from adenine1, however, it has been shown that they rathercause inhibition2. Here we report a study on the reactions of three plant CAOs from grass pea (Lathyrus sativus), lentil (Lens esculenta) and a Mediterranean shrub (Euphorbia characias) with synthetic N6-aminoalkyl derivatives of adenine representing combined analogues of cytokinins and polyamines. The following compounds were prepared using an established method: N6-(3-aminopropyl)adenine, APAD; N6-(4-aminobutyl)adenine, ABAD; N6-(4-amino-trans-but-2-enyl)adenine, ATBAD; N6-(4-amino-cis-but-2-enyl)adenine, ACBAD and N6-(4-aminobut-2-ynyl)adenine, ABYAD. First, reaction rates of enzymatic oxidation were measured to decide between substrate and inhibitory properties. Two of the studied adenine derivatives were found to be substrates (ABA
