Translingual imaginings: Teaching creative writing to international exchange students in a second language context
Original language description
The paper examines the pedagogical and intercultural challenges of teaching creative writing in English as a second language (ESL) to the target group of international exchange students during periods of their international academic mobility. It examines how ESL creative writing functions as both a linguistic and cultural negotiation, enabling students to engage imaginatively with host cultures via writing in a non-native tongue. The study also addresses key challenges encountered in such transnational pedagogical context, including linguistic insecurity, uneven language proficiency of student writers, barriers to creative expression, and the complex emotional responses involved in writing personal or imaginative texts in a second language.
