The Disinfection efficiency of Iodine Teat Dips for Dairy Cattle

  • Original language description

Before being introduced to the market different variants of new iodine teat dips for dairy cattle were compared. All tested dips contained an organic iodine compound (PVP-iodine). Three barrier teat dips with concentrations of 0.28 %, 0.18 % and 0.10 % active iodine and one non-barrier 0.15 % iodine teat dip were monitored. The barrier dip contained, besides disinfectants, organic polymers, which created a film on the surface of the teat. Teat contamination before washing, after washing and 30 minutes after dip application was monitored. Measurements were taken while freely stabled in stalls strewn with straw. Differences between individual non-barrier teat dips were not significant. Differences between barrier teat dips and non-barrier teat dips werein most cases significant. From this we know that increasing the iodine concentration of non-barrier teat dips from 0.10 % to 0.28 % does not increase their effectiveness. Better results can be achieved by using barrier teat dips. Based o
