Service to the New State? Emil Saudek and Camill Hoffmann as Translators of Tomáš G. Masaryk’s Texts

  • Original language description

The study focuses on the translation of Masaryk’s seminal works Nová Evropa (New Europe) and Světová revoluce (The Making of State) into German from the point of view of their translators – Emil Saudek and Camill Hoffmann, who also understood the translation of the Czechoslovak president’s works as an expression of loyalty to the new state and a means of their own cultural integration into its new structures. By comparing the career and translation trajectories of both protagonists, it is shown how the translator’s position changed in spatiotemporal coordinates – while before 1914 Saudek gained more prestige with his translations in the context of multicultural Vienna, after 1918 Hoffmann, with his numerous contacts in Germany, was more successful and more important for the new Czechoslovak cultural diplomacy.
