Forms of resistance to workplace bullying

  • Original language description

This presentation focuses on the multiple strategies of resistance employed by targets of workplace bullying to defy abusive treatment at work. The study draws on 37 narratives from individuals who were targets of bullying while employed at various public and private organizations in the Czech Republic. The aim of the study was to identify specific strategies of resistance to bullying employed by the targeted individuals and to examine under what circumstances these strategies were effective. The analysis showed that individual and informal forms of resistance (e.g. avoidance) were prevalent, whereas collective and formal forms of resistance (e.g. grievances) were rare. The analysis further indicated that active forms of resistance, namely confrontation, grievances, and early exit, were seen by the targeted individuals as the most effective strategies of resistance, allowing them to maintain a sense of agency and empowerment in the face of their otherwise deeply traumatic experience.
