    Osteoblast Differentiation and Maturation

  • Original language description

The process of osteoblast differentiation and maturation is strictly regulated. During either endochondral or intramembrane ossification, mesenchymal stem cells condensate and differentiate into preosteoblasts and subsequently into osteoblasts. This differentiation is at all time points controlled by transcription factors, whose expression is under the influence of hormonal and growth factors. The function of transcription factors is the regulation of gene expression and to obtain the phenotype of osteoblasts. Activation and function of various types of factors during osteoblastic differentiation is managed by coordinated and complex processes. Knowledge of signaling pathways during osteogenic differentiation are used within the development and testing of scaffolds in bone tissue engineering.
