Factors influencing encapsulation efficiency of biologically active compound into PLA submikroparticles

  • Original language description

The low molecular weight biodegradable poly(lactide acid) (PLA) was tested as suitable material for encapsulation of bioactive agent into microparticles by the method of emulsification and solvent evaporation at reduced pressure. The attention was focused on the examination of encapsulation capacity for incorporation of a model herbicide. The initial amount of herbicide was altered and parameters characterizing microparticles like encapsulation efficiency, size and shape were evaluated by different methods. Low molecular PLA proved to be a suitable matrix for easy encapsulation of bioactive compounds by the oil-in-water emulsion solvent evaporation method, furthermore without significant changes in particles size. The relative lowest loss of herbicidealong with the highest encapsulation efficiency was achieved for the highest initial concentration of herbicide which is close to the critical concentration under which the particles could still be prepared.
