Development of the acoustic startle response in normal and noise-exposed rat pups
Original language description
Noise exposure during early postnatal development results in impaired auditory processing in adult rats (Bureš et al, 2010; Rybalko et al., 2011). In the present study, monitoring the developmental changes in the acoustic startle response (ASR) was usedto assess differences in the maturation of the rat auditory system under normal conditions and after brief intensive noise exposure on the 14th postnatal day (P14). The animals were exposed to a 125 dB SPL broad-band noise for either 8, 12 or 25 min. TheASRs to tones (4-32 kHz) were examined in rat pups from P12 to P30. In 12-day-old animals, a reliable ASR was observed only to 110-120 dB SPL stimuli at frequencies below 8 kHz. ASRs in 14-day-old rats were characterized by similar ASR amplitudes for both high and low frequency stimuli. The maturation of the ASR pattern during the P15-P30 period was characterized in control and noise-exposed rats by a similar decrease in ASR latency, but with different changes in the ASR amplitude.
