Sites of creativity. Arts and crafts education: constructing identites, saving the heritage of the past, designing the future

Anotace anglicky

Successful conservation and presentation of material and immaterial cultural heritage as well as scholarly interpretation depend on a proper knowledge of the conditions under which the cultural objects had been created in the past. Artistic education represents the basic level where the conditions for the future artistic, craft and design production are being formed. The project will research the traditions of Czech (and Czech-German) artistic education undertaken at secondary and high schools primarily focused on arts and crafts, applied arts and design from the last third of the 19th century until the end of the 20th century. It will show which ideas, concepts and competences were being taught at these specialized schools and as a result the graduates based on them their own creative practices. Knowledge of such practices will support the use of innovative, correct, and focused conservation techniques and art-historical interpretations. It will also investigate and analyse the role of these specific educational traditions for the construction of Czech national cultural identity in the framework of relationships between the Czechs, the Germans and the Slovaks
