Ceroplastics - Research and Development of Restoration Technology

Anotace anglicky

The aim of the project is combination of basic and applied research of various wax sculptures with a special focus on portrait ceroplastics of the 18th and 19th century. From the technical point of view, these are very diverse artwork (i.e. modeling vs. casting; colorless, dyed in the mass or painted) often originally used in historical arrangements. For this reason, they currently show a wide range of problems. Partial goals of this project are therefore: to map the historical technology of ceroplastic relief production with a focus on regional authors and workshops, used techniques and materials; to document the range of physical damage and to detect degradation processes. Other goal is experimental testing of suitability of the use of modern restoration materials, which will be tested on laboratory-prepared samples in order to verify their stability and reversibility. The optimized materials and processes will be put into practice and applied to real objects from the National Museum collection. Based on the obtained results, there will be an elaboration of the methodology of long-term preservation and care of ceroplastics and the monumental process of restoration of portrait ceroplastics.
