The current project focuses on the comparative investigation of two empirical domains in the grammar of Czech: (i) the relatively complex system of verbal stems and inflections; and (ii) the expression various types of exceptions. What is common to the work on the two domains is that we will be using a relatively new diagnostic to organize the empirical data: the so-called *ABA. The *ABA tool is based on ordering linguistic categories in such a way that syncretism is restricted by linear contiguity in that order. The method itself is rather traditional (going back to Sanskrit grammarians); however, a new theoretical grounding of the *ABA diagnostic has been proposed recently in a number of works, including work done by the PI in Caha (2009, 2013, 2016). There are reasons to believe that applying this method is going to yield new empirical and theoretical insights in the domains to be investigated.
