Anotace anglicky

The project is focused on the civilized woman as an icon of modernity in the context of visual culture of the First Czechoslovak Republic. Its main goal is to investigate and critically analyze 1) how inter-war artists, designers, architects, photographs and film makers employed different visual forms and aspects of the civilized woman; 2) how did the civilizing rituals project into local as well as international debates about modernism and avant-garde; 3) how did the figure of the civilized woman function as a role model, that is how it contributed to forming modern female identity but how it also maintained the patriarchal and heterosexual model of social and cultural order; 4) how powerful were the images of modern femininity for Czech inter-war popular culture and how did it parallelly turn into an important iconographic element of the official state representation; 5) how did women receive and consume the idea(l)s of the civilized “second sex”; 6) how was this female ideal linked to various schools of thoughts, be it the philosophy of of T. G. Masaryk or the left-wing ideas.
