Unity and Multiplicity in Contemporary Thought

A new phenomenon has been widely observed: the so-called “end of postmodernism”. This phenomenon is marked by an interweaving of postmodern cultural patterns with patterns that could be labeled modern or even premodern. We aim to contribute to an understanding of this phenomenon by studying it as it is manifested in contemporary thought. Our project focuses on the concepts of unity and multiplicity, as they appear in several of the most noteworthy bodies of theory to have been associated with the so-called “end of postmodernism.” These include the philosophy of Alain Badiou, theories of “the people” in the thought of Jacques Rancière and Ernesto Laclau, and the theological movement known as “radical orthodoxy.” These bodies of theory all point to a conception of unity that integrates the principle of multiplicity, with unity and multiplicity interrelated in a way that we could understand through the figure of the Möbius strip or oscillation between poles. We suggest that this new conceptions may be becoming more generally influential in political and social life.
