The project focuses on translation and cultural transfers based on the example of Emil Saudek, a prominent translator of O. Březina, J. S. Machar, V. Rakous or T. G. Masaryk against the backdrop of the ''creative milieu'' of Vienna in the first quarter of the 20th century. The subject of research is Jewish-Czech-German interactions, the interlinking of various groups and circles thanks to translation, involving art and politics in Vienna and literature networks between Vienna, Prague and other places (e.g. Berlin, Leipzig, Jaroměřice). Translation will be examined as a means for sociocultural integration and for its importance to the development of Czech and German literature, particularly with regard to the aesthetic changes taking place around 1910. Saudek's concept of Vienna as a ''bridge into Europe'' for Czech literature will be examined, as will changes to the rapprochement programme brought about both by the First World War and 1918, and the changes of aesthetic modernism (symbolism, expressionism and the post-war avant-garde).
