Little Big Translation Literature – Czech and German Translations of Yiddish Literature as a Reflection of Changing Politics and Society

Anotace anglicky

Based on an analysis of Czech and German translations of Yiddish literature, particularly between 1945 and 1989, the project will focus on the question of how the developments in society and politics in former Czechoslovakia and former GDR were reflected in the perception of Yiddish culture and in translations of Yiddish literature. In addition to the translations themselves, various types of paratexts and epitexts and articles on Yiddish culture and literature in selected periodicals will be analyzed for this purpose. Translations published in former FRG will only be taken into account marginally. Research on translations of Yiddish literature in the period in question into Czech and German, together with the analysis of the paratexts and epitexts, opens up new insights into the development of translation strategies in relation to the hierarchy of cultures (small Czech language culture versus large German language culture) and to the political system, which was in certain aspects comparable for the two target cultures under study.
