Cazamian’s Concept of Humour

The project will deal with Louis Cazamian’s concept of humour. I will suggest that Cazamian’s analysis of mechanism of humour develops Henri Bergson’s concise remarks on humour as a type of comical transposition of language. Similarly to Bergson, Cazamian emphasises the relation of humour to morals and scientific view of reality. However, Cazamian considers humour as a complex phenomenon which has both negative and positive side. The negative side of humour consists in the substitution of a natural reaction on certain fact by an invented reaction. The positive side of humour equals to the nature of an invented reaction and the nature of feeling or an idea expressed by such a reaction. According to Cazamian, it is possible to define only negative side of humour; the positive side is always unique, because it corresponds to the personality of humourist. I will accentuate that Cazamian’s concept of humour presents the result of the fruitful and innovative elaboration of several important notions of Bergson’s philosophy and aesthetics, which were not mentioned by Cazamian explicitly.
